John Island Boxing & Development

Coaching professional and amateur boxers for over 20 years

Trainer John Island is the definition of champion—overcoming an unstable home, street-life and an ongoing battle with cancer. It is his fighting spirit that has enabled him to make it this far in his life and it is that quality he tries to instill in everyone who steps through the gym doors. His work ethic and compassion are reasons why some people refer to him as their brother. Boxing is a way of life for Island. It teaches hard work discipline and dedication.

While trying to become a professional fighter, Island was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in his head and neck nine years ago. I immediately began treatment.” Island said he became extremely ill after a few weeks of going through radiation therapy. “It took me two years to recover,” he said. “All of the people I had in my corner, as far as boxing, disappeared."

At that stage in his life, Island said teaching boxing was not something he held in high regard.  “I didn’t choose to be a trainer, it chose me,” he said. “I didn’t think I could do it. (Eventually) I picked up a couple of clients and began to train people. As I began to share, people began to share with me.” Through training a few personal clients, Island said he realized he had talent as a trainer. His first experience with the sport of boxing came at the age of 10 in the Any Body Can Foundation’s boxing program where he received some training from late professional boxer Archie Moore. “I began to see that the knowledge in my head is something that nobody can take away from me,” Island said. “I have something that is special.”
